Understanding Eligibility and What It Could Mean for You

Here’s what you need to know:
Who Can Qualify for Spousal Benefits?
You may qualify for spousal benefits if:
- You’re married to someone who qualifies for Social Security benefits
You can receive up to 50% of your spouse’s full retirement benefit amount. - You’re at least 62 years old
You can start receiving spousal benefits at age 62, but they will be reduced if you claim them before your full retirement age. - Your own benefit is less than the spousal benefit
If you qualify for Social Security based on your own work record, but your spousal benefit would be higher, you’ll receive the higher of the two (not both).
What If You’re Divorced or Widowed?
You may still qualify for spousal benefits if:
- You were married for at least 10 years
Divorced individuals can claim benefits on their ex-spouse’s record if they remain unmarried and meet other criteria. - You’re a widow or widower
Surviving spouses can receive benefits as early as age 60 (or age 50 if disabled). In some cases, surviving spouses caring for a child under 16 may qualify earlier.
How Much Can You Receive?
- If you wait until your full retirement age (generally between 66 and 67), you could receive up to 50% of your spouse’s benefit.
- If you claim earlier, your benefit will be reduced permanently.
- If you’re receiving your own benefit and it’s lower than the spousal amount, Social Security will top up your benefit to match the higher amount.
Other Considerations
- Your spouse must have filed for their own benefits for you to receive spousal benefits (except in the case of divorce).
- Remarriage can affect eligibility, especially for divorced or widowed individuals.
- You can apply for spousal benefits online, by phone, or at a local Social Security office.
Planning Ahead
Spousal benefits can be a crucial part of your retirement income strategy. If you think you might qualify, consider speaking with a financial advisor or contacting the Social Security Administration directly for personalized guidance.
